Operations Management Professor John Kanet awarded the Reimar Luest Prize by the Humboldt Foundation.
John J. Kanet, professor and Niehaus Chair in Operations Management, has received the Reimar Luest Prize for International Scholarly and Cultural Exchange, for his outstanding contributions to the promotion of cultural and academic relations with Germany.

The prestigious international award is granted jointly by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Helmut Schwarz, president of the Humboldt Foundation, presented the award to Kanet at ceremonies at Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin in June.

As well as participating in research collaborations with German scholars, Kanet has helped initiate exchange programs, teaching American students in Germany and supporting German scholars’ visits to the U.S. He frequently has served as a visiting professor at several German universities. As part of the award, Kanet is spending three months conducting research at the Institute of Production Management and Management Accounting at LMU Munich in Germany, one of the leading research universities in Europe.

Kanet’s research is focused on production management, particularly on practical production planning and scheduling as well as inventory and supply chain management.

The Reimar Luest Award honors scholars who have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of cultural and academic relations between their own countries and Germany. Winners of these awards are invited to spend time in Germany at a host institution of their choice.

Jatinder (Jeet) N. D. Gupta awarded 2014 UAH Distinguished Research Award
Dr. Jatinder (Jeet) N. D. Gupta, Associate Dean for Graduate and Sponsored Programs, Eminent Scholar of Management of Technology, Professor of Information Systems and Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Engineering Management at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) received the 2014 UAH Distinguished Research Award. This award is really competitive and is based on the life-time excellence and achievement in research and is awarded only to a maximum of one person in the entire University in any one year. Faculty recipients of these awards should be outstanding original, creative and productive individuals whose research achievements have gained an international recognition and have influenced students and scholars around the world.

Jeet is the only one from the UAH college of business to receive this award since its inception on the top of the Eminent Scholar title (the only one in the entire University at this time) that he holds at UAH since 2002, which is the highest level of endowed chair at UAH, even higher than the distinguished or university professorships.

Jeet is life member of POMS. He served as the Conference chair or co-chair for several national and international POMS conferences including POM World Congress. His other numerous contributions to POMS include being an early Department Editor of POM, POMS Vice-President for Publications, and POMS President.

Kathryn E. Stecke awarded 2014 Purdue University Distinguished Woman Scholar of the Year
Kathryn E. Stecke, Ashbel Smith Professor of Operations Management at the University of Texas at Dallas, has received the 2014 Purdue University Distinguished Woman Scholar of the Year, a university award from Purdue University. Purdue notes that “This honor holds great prestige. To be nominated alone is a credit to the high regard your home department at Purdue has for you. Of all the possible candidates, the deans of each of the colleges and schools were permitted to nominate only two distinguished women scholars. There was a rich pool of nominees. The selection committee found your scholarly achievements to be ranked among the top. This award is intended to recognize the doctoral alumnae of Purdue who have made significant scholarly contributions. In recognizing these women, an example is made, and a standard set for the aspiring women scholars at Purdue today”. 

Purdue University School of Industrial Engineering notes “Purdue Industrial Engineering is honored to announce that one of its prominent alumnae – Dr. Kathryn Stecke – has been selected by the Butler Center for Leadership Excellence for its 2014 Distinguished Women Scholar Award. We are proud of all of Dr. Stecke’s contributions to, and beyond, the field of IE”. Kathy is the 1st Purdue engineer to receive this award.

Kathy has been a member of POMS from the very beginning. She has served on the Program Committee of at least 6 POMS conferences, including General Chair. She has served on the POMS Board of Directors several times, including currently. She has (or is) served the Production and Operations Management journal as Associate Editor (or on the Editorial Review Board).

Rajan Suri inducted into the Industry Week 2010 Manufacturing Hall of Fame
Rajan Suri, Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is one of only 10 people to be inducted into the Industry Week 2010 Manufacturing Hall of Fame, which they call the "Dream Team".

Others in the 2010 Dream Team include Michael Dell (Founder of Dell Computer), Donald Fites (Former CEO of Caterpillar) and Rich Teerlink (past Chairman/CEO of Harley-Davidson). Last year, the 2009 Hall of Fame included Steve Jobs (of Apple Computer), Lee Iacocca (former head of Chrysler) and Jack Welch (former head of GE and famous for Six Sigma efforts). Hau Lee elected to the National Academy of Engineering 
Hau Lee, Thoma Professor of Operations, Information, and Technology at Stanford Graduate Business School and former President of the POMS Society, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for “contributions demonstrating the impact of information-sharing on supply chain design and management.”

Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions in Engineering. Academy membership honor those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education".

Founded in 1964, NAE has more than 2,000 peer-elected members and foreign associates, senior professionals in business, academia, and government who are among the world's most accomplished engineers. They provide engineering leadership in service to the nation, including NAE's role as advisor to the federal government.
